Under The Bar

I was just about to do my final rep on the bench press when something happened. As the bar started to lower I was talking to myself confidently saying I was going to lift this weight. I could visualize myself pushing the bar up until I lock out my elbows at the top and I tried with every ounce of energy I had. But as the bar reached the bottom (for a millisecond) I thought to myself that the weight was heavy and that I wasn’t sure if I would get it up.

The result was I failed.

One of the reasons I love lifting weight so much is that it doesn’t only train the body to be strong but it also trains the mind to do the same. It leaves very little room for error in your mindset. It teaches you that in order to achieve a desired outcome you need to attack it with complete confidence in yourself no matter how big the external challenge seems.

Want to lose weight? Travel the world? Write a book? Fall in love? Be happy?

All this can happen as long as you stop doubting yourself. Under the bar, like in life if you believe in yourself, the sky truly is the limit.
