Where Did The Motivation Go?

Have you lost weight but don’t feel the motivation you did at the beginning of your journey?
Are you missing that sense of urgency to lose the last bit of fat?
That urgency that first made you get up and lose weight in the first place?

Most often people “get off the couch” and decided to lose weight because they are sick of the way they look and feel or because they fear that their health is in jeopardy. The problem is that somewhere along the way the body fat goes down a little, the comfort level sets in and the fear disappears.

I wrote this because this is the exact situation of someone I went to lunch with yesterday. I felt I didn’t offer enough help on the spot, so here it is. Here is how you change things around.

First off – You need to realize that the fatter you are, the easier it is to put the weight back on.
That if your body fat percentage doesn’t reach low enough levels (roughly 12% for men and 18% for women) the more insulin resistant you will be. Not getting your body fat level low enough is like walking on the edge of a slippery slope and the second you fall off track by eating bad one day (which you will eventually) you automatically accumulate fat and get back to where you started.

Let me give you a personal example; When I was 192lbs I would gain weight very easily, as soon as I would indulge in carbohydrate rich cheat MEAL, I would not lose weight for the whole WEEK. Fast forward now (at 160lbs, 8% body fat) and I can have 2 DAYS a week where I cheat and still lose body fat. Your body can turn into a burning furnace when your body fat is low, so it’s worth getting low enough.

Here is what I suggest:

1. Find a scary date. I’m not talking about that girl you went out with once, I mean a date in your calendar. A date where you need to be in the best shape of your life. It can be your daughters wedding, a beach volley ball tournament, a running event, a cycling event, a figure show, a grappling competition, a carry your wife contest. It doesn’t really matter as long as it scares you.

2. Once you have the date,  commit to it. Register now before that little voice tells you not to. Before you make up the perfect excuse. Just do it.

3. Set a new path. Simply having a scary goal with a deadline isn’t enough. You need to see the path to get there. I find that having a fun training program that changes through different phases  is motivating in itself. Your personal trainer is there for that. It’s like holding a carrot in front of you, as you can’t wait to complete different milestones.

Goals change a long the way. Not wanting to die is a great motivator to get you off the couch but in order to stay healthy and fit for life and avoid the roller coaster of weight gain to weight loss you need to set new goals, commit to a deadline and set a new path.
